Constellation follows Jo Ericsson, a Swedish astronaut who survives a disaster on the International Space Station. When Jo returns to Earth, she finds that her home, husband, and daughter do not feel the same. She investigates strange gaps in her memory and signs of another reality. The show uses a slow, tense style with science fiction, family drama, and horror.
The clearest representation choice is a woman leading an international space mission, supported by a mixed cast of astronauts and scientists. The story focuses on motherhood, family bonds, grief, and the fear of losing your own identity. It also shows scientists hiding dangerous research and putting people at risk. The show does not build its story around modern identity politics, queer themes, or activist messages.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Constellation.
Woke representation / casting
The show places a Swedish woman in the top astronaut role and makes her the main hero. The international space crew also includes black American astronauts and scientists. The setting makes a mixed crew believable, so the identity signal stays weak.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One forum discussion accused Apple of “box ticking” and called the show woke. The complaint did not identify a clear race, gender, or identity message in the story. Most other complaints focused on confusing science, weak pacing, or the ending. The backlash is small and comes mainly from one online discussion.
8%
Creator track record context
The main creator and writers have no strong cached record of activist or identity-driven work. Casting director Sophie Holland has publicly supported diversity in major roles. Several producers have worked on projects about race, protest, and social injustice. This gives limited background context, but the show itself does not strongly match those themes.
