Katla follows Gríma, a rescue worker who stays near Vík after the volcano under the ice erupts for a full year. She still searches for her sister Ása, who vanished on the glacier when the eruption began. The few people who remain face ash, danger, empty homes, and painful old secrets. When people who should be dead appear from the ice, the slow mystery turns grief and family conflict into a bleak science-fiction story.
The show’s main audience-visible representation choice is its young woman lead, who handles rescue work and drives the search for answers. The story also gives women important roles in family conflict, illness, pregnancy, and old love. Its main ideas concern grief, guilt, memory, faith, folklore, science, and whether a copy can replace a loved one. Those choices serve Gríma’s family crisis and the mystery of the ash doubles.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Katla.
Woke representation / casting
Gríma is a young Icelandic woman who leads rescue work and the search for Ása. Women also hold several major roles in the family, clinic, hotel, and town. The Icelandic and Swedish cast fits the setting and does not show a broad diversity pattern. GDRN called the young-woman lead unusual in Iceland, which adds a small representation signal.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on the eruption, family pain, science, faith, folklore, work, and survival. It does not push modern identity, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story explores grief, guilt, memory, trauma, love, faith, folklore, and the fear of losing a loved one. The doubles raise personal questions about selfhood, not modern race, gender, sexuality, or activist politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The show depicts evacuation orders, police, doctors, a church, and family failures. It does not turn these parts of the story into a modern attack on Western institutions, men, Christianity, or traditional family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Katla is an original story about an Icelandic town, a volcano, and ash doubles. It does not change an established character, source story, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke complaints, and wider searches found no sustained claim that Katla pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing politics. Public complaints focused on slow pacing, confusing choices, and the open ending.

Creator track record context
Sigurjón Kjartansson has a cached score of 0/100 and is known mainly for comedy and genre television. Baltasar Kormákur and David Mar Stefánsson have low cached scores of 14/100 and 19/100 linked to film craft and limited cultural inclusion. Lilja Sigurðardóttir has a higher cached score of 55/100 because queer themes and women making their own choices recur in her wider work. The combined creator context is mild, and Katla itself does not make that queer focus central.
