Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old Jason Hochberg, who returns to Camp Pineway for another summer as a counselor. Jason loves the camp, but his younger co-workers think he is too old and childish to lead them. The group plans to party, flirt, and prepare the camp before the children arrive. A masked killer then murders the counselors, and Jason must protect the people who keep making fun of him. The movie uses bloody attacks, silly jokes, and a warm coming-of-age story.
The film shows a mixed group of young counselors, including a gay theater kid, a vegan, a girl who trusts spirits, and a student who talks about gender studies and sexual fairness. These traits mostly work as quick jokes or simple character types. The story gives Claire a brave rescue role and lets Demi mock the idea that a strong man controls a woman's choices. Jason's main lesson is that growing up means leaving his childhood behind, while the killers chase fame through social media.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Hell of a Summer.
Woke representation / casting
The counselor group includes First Nations, Iranian American, and Jamaican-Haitian Canadian performers in named roles. The film gives some of them major roles, including a couple, a love interest, and a survivor. The story never presents these choices as an empowerment or diversity campaign. The result is a mild visible representation signal, not a strong identity message.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Chris says he plans to study gender studies. Chris also claims that women usually perform the first sexual favor in straight relationships. Miley attacks meat eaters and tells an allergy sufferer to enjoy his privilege. Demi mocks the idea that a strong man made her kill, but the film treats these lines as jokes.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
Ezra is a gay theater kid, and his sexuality is part of his on-screen character type. Chris uses gender studies and sexual fairness as part of his comic personality. Claire acts as a brave rescuer, and Demi rejects the idea that a man controls her choices. These elements recur as jokes or side traits, but Jason's central story stays about growing up and leaving camp.
20%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Bobby treats women as targets for hookups and says women are attracted to power. The film makes his bragging look foolish and gives Claire the key rescue actions. Chris makes a brief joke about plastic being the real killer, and Miley attacks meat and dairy culture. The story does not build a larger attack on family, faith, money, or Western institutions.
17%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Hell of a Summer is an original story about camp counselors and a masked killer. It does not change a known character, book, historical person, or earlier canon.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke complaints, boycott talk, or review bombing about the film. Other public discussion focused on quality, genre, and the gay side character rather than claims about woke or DEI messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk have cached scores of 0 and no high-confidence activist record. Carmen Cuba has a cached score of 37 for supporting diverse talent, and Jason Bateman has a cached score of 29 for mild political comments. The other cached producer scores are mostly low or moderate and do not show a strong activist pattern. The available creator context adds limited support, not a clear reason to expect a strongly woke film.
