I Came By follows Toby, a young London graffiti artist who breaks into rich people’s homes with his friend Jay. They paint the words “I Came By” to scare people they see as powerful and protected. Toby enters the home of retired High Court judge Hector Blake and finds a hidden prisoner in the basement. The film shifts from a story about angry young vandals to a dark crime thriller about murder, fear, and survival.
The film gives strong attention to class power, racial prejudice, immigration, and the way important people can escape blame. Jay says that a black man may face a harsher punishment than a white man for the same crime. Hector uses his public image, police links, and legal status to hide his crimes against vulnerable people. A gay Iranian asylum seeker becomes one of his victims, so identity and immigration themes affect the main danger, even though the film stays focused on suspense.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for I Came By.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film uses a diverse modern London cast, but the main roles fit the setting and their character backgrounds. No identity-first casting claim or clear mismatch with the story world appears.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film has repeated talk about targeting wealthy and powerful people. Jay treats the graffiti as a political act, while Toby admits that his anger is personal and reckless. Characters also discuss how a black man may face harsher punishment and how poor people with nowhere to go lack protection. The dialogue is clear but brief, and the story spends more time on danger than on political debate.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes a gay Iranian asylum seeker a key victim in Hector’s hidden crimes. The story links his sexuality and immigration status to his danger and lack of protection. The film also shows a black character weighing the risk of harsher punishment for the same crime. These identity issues shape the suspense, but the main story remains a crime thriller about power and murder.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows powerful people escaping normal checks. Hector’s status as a former High Court judge helps him fool police and protect his public image. The story also presents police limits, social rank, class privilege, and the asylum system as barriers for vulnerable people. Anvari described the film as being about institutions that fail people, so this critique is central, even though the film also works as a thriller.
55%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story, not an adaptation of established characters or a retelling of real historical events.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some IMDb and SensCritique users accused the film of woke preaching, propaganda, or a Netflix-made social agenda. A few comments objected to its picture of rich older men and its class message. The evidence is limited to scattered audience posts, with no major anti-woke campaign or news controversy found.
12%
Creator track record context
Babak Anvari has a 41/100 creator-context score and has a record of work about Iranian identity, war, authoritarian power, and cultural displacement. He also publicly supported Iran’s freedom movement. Co-writer Namsi Khan has a 20/100 score and no recorded activist profile. The other listed producers and crew have mostly low or limited political profiles, so the overall creator signal is moderate.
