Icefall follows Ani Bayawaa, a young Indigenous game warden in Montana. She arrests Harlan, a poacher who finds money from a crashed plane under a frozen lake. Criminals and corrupt police chase them across the ice as it begins to melt. Ani and Harlan must work together despite their very different goals. The film is a violent, cold survival thriller with a simple crime story. The film gives Ani a leading role as a capable Indigenous woman, a mother, and a government game warden. Her background is part of the setting and character, but the story mainly focuses on survival, greed, trust, and redemption. The film does not appear to center on modern identity politics, gender activism, or DEI messages. Its conflict with corrupt police comes from the crime plot rather than a wider attack on Western institutions. The Indigenous setting and characters add cultural detail without clearly turning the film into a representation-first project.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Icefall.
Woke representation / casting
Ani is an Indigenous woman in the main heroic role, and reviews identify her as a Blackfoot local and working mother. Her background fits the Montana setting and the story gives no clear sign that the casting was promoted as a diversity campaign. The representation is noticeable, but it does not appear to be the film’s main message.
