Den of Thieves follows Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien, a hard-drinking Los Angeles County sheriff who leads a rough robbery unit. He hunts Ray Merrimen, a former Marine who leads a skilled band of bank robbers. Merrimen’s crew plans to break into the Los Angeles Federal Reserve and steal money meant for destruction. The film uses gun battles, threats, sex, drugs, and loud jokes to create a grim and tough-guy crime story.
The only identity-related material is a few crude lines about gay pride and whether Donnie is gay. The lines use sexuality as a threat and do not shape the plot. The film instead centers on loyalty, betrayal, bad police behavior, military skill, and the blurred line between cops and criminals. These ideas stay inside a rough crime story rather than a modern activist message.
