I'm Not Ashamed follows Rachel Joy Scott during her last year as a student at Columbine High School in Colorado. Rachel is a teenager who wants friends, romance, and a place in the school drama group, but family strain and her own poor choices leave her unsure of herself. After a summer away, she returns with a stronger Christian faith and tries to live it openly among classmates who tease her. The calm high school story grows darker as Rachel helps troubled students while Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold prepare for the 1999 massacre.
Rachel's faith is the movie's main force, and her prayers and diary voice-over guide nearly every part of her change. She learns to forgive, care for a homeless teen, stand against bullying, and speak about Jesus even when friends reject her. The film presents compassion as a way to change other lives, but it also links the Columbine deaths to a clear good-and-evil Christian message. The final shooting is brief, yet the story treats Rachel as a witness whose death gives lasting meaning to her faith, which makes the movie more about Christian testimony than a full account of the massacre.
