In 1970s Rio de Janeiro, Eunice Paiva lives with her husband, Rubens, and their five children in a warm home near the beach. The military government takes Rubens away for questioning, and he never comes back. Eunice is also held with one daughter, but the family receives no clear answer about his fate. She moves the children, searches for the truth, and tries to keep their daily life from falling apart. The film has a calm family tone that slowly turns into a tense and sad story about fear, loss, and memory.
The film gives Eunice the main path from a housewife who protects her children to a law student and lawyer who keeps seeking justice. Her strength and leadership are visible for much of the film, but the story presents them as a response to real events rather than as a modern gender campaign. A later section shows her teaching about Indigenous land rights and arguing that families deserve compensation and legal judgment for crimes by the dictatorship. These ideas add a clear human-rights and social-justice message, yet they stay tied to Brazil's real history and occupy less time than the family drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for I'm Still Here.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main roles are Brazilian people playing the real Paiva family. The mother and daughter actors play Eunice at different ages, which matches the story. The casting does not show a diversity-first identity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film contains a short law-school talk about protecting Indigenous people's land rights. Eunice later says that families should receive compensation and that dictatorship crimes should be judged. These are activist and human-rights statements, but they are brief and tied to Brazil's real history.
16%
Identity-driven story themes
The film follows Eunice as she moves from a 1970s housewife to the main parent, a law student, and a lawyer. Eunice's leadership and work for disappeared people and Indigenous land rights shape the later part of the film. The story presents female strength and independence as important, but it does not make women superior in every scene or turn the plot into a current gender campaign. Her change is grounded in real events that leave her family without Rubens.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a military dictatorship arresting, torturing, and hiding the death of civilians. The criticism stays tied to Brazil's past and does not attack modern Western family life, Christianity, capitalism, or normal social rules.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts a memoir about real people and keeps their time, family ties, and identities. No established character is given a new race, gender, sexuality, or hero role.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Far-right groups in Brazil organized a boycott and called the film a political campaign or a distorted attack on conservative values. Other right-leaning posts called it leftist propaganda and attacked the director and actors as part of the political fight. News reports describe the campaign as real and visible but smaller than the film's broad audience support. The complaints focus on dictatorship and left-wing politics, not LGBTQ content or DEI casting.

Creator track record context
Walter Salles has a long record of films about political repression, inequality, migration, and people pushed aside. Marcelo Rubens Paiva's public work centers on dictatorship memory, human rights, and accountability. Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega often write about women's limited choices, family pressure, and overlooked lives. The producers' cached records are mixed, but several have backed socially engaged Brazilian films. This context supports a clear social-justice pattern around the title, while the movie stays rooted in a real family and past dictatorship.
