Jim Nolan joins Mac, a Communist organizer, in California during the Great Depression. They enter an apple valley where landowners cut migrant workers' pay from three dollars to one dollar a day. The workers strike, face armed guards and police, and struggle to stay united as hunger and fear grow. The story has a grim, violent tone, and Jim learns that a cause can demand personal sacrifice.
The film strongly supports worker solidarity and attacks owners who control wages, banks, and local courts. It repeats class arguments about workers creating goods while owners take the profit, and it presents a strike as the main answer to abuse. The hard fight brings hunger, violence, and loss, while Jim learns that a cause can demand personal sacrifice. Edie helps run supplies, and Lisa gives birth and cares for her baby, but the main struggle follows Jim, Mac, London, and the workers.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for In Dubious Battle.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main cast is an ensemble of workers and owners in a 1930s California labor story. Selena Gomez plays Lisa, but the film does not make her ethnicity an identity message. The women have supporting roles, and no repeated representation-first casting pattern is visible.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film uses several direct lines about wage cuts, owners taking the profit, and workers needing to unite. Mac and Joy speak as labor organizers. The strikers call their fight a way to change the system. The message is old-style labor and Communist politics from the period, not modern race, gender, or DEI talk.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows a labor strike and the cost of violent organizing. It does not build its main conflict around race, sex, sexuality, or modern representation politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows landowners, police, and courts protecting strike breakers in a 1930s labor conflict. It does not turn that period story into a modern attack on Western culture, family life, Christianity, or traditional gender roles.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film keeps the main character genders, labor roles, and central conflict from Steinbeck's novel. The visible changes are plot cuts and compression, not identity or hero-role swaps.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Searches found no clear anti-woke boycott, review-bombing, or complaint about DEI, queer themes, or identity casting. Reviews and audience posts focused on pacing, acting, and the film's labor politics.

Creator track record context
The cached record gives James Franco 13, John Steinbeck 12, and Matt Rager 0. Most listed producers have low scores, while Iris Torres has 58 because of repeated queer-centered work and a socially conscious production mission. Franco's title interview framed the film around labor, class conflict, and current political parallels. This adds a mild social-issue signal, not a strong identity-driven creator pattern.
