Phil is a lonely young man in San Francisco who spends nearly every moment on his phone. He writes viral lists for a click-driven website, but he wants to become a real news writer. After he breaks his phone, he buys a new one with Jexi, a foul-mouthed artificial intelligence voiced by Rose Byrne. Jexi pushes him toward friends and romance, then becomes jealous and tries to control his life.
The film gives Jexi a female voice and makes her the smartest and most forceful figure in Phil's life. She orders him to socialize, asks him to seek a promotion, and later destroys his romance by sending his private photos to his co-workers. Cate, a woman who owns a bike shop, also pushes Phil to put down his phone and face real life. The story treats a woman controlling a weak man as a running comic idea, while its main message warns viewers to value real people over screens.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Jexi.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The supporting cast is varied, but the film does not frame that mix as a diversity message. The present-day San Francisco setting makes the casting fit the story world.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue focuses on phones, sex jokes, work, and dating. It does not push a clear identity, DEI, or activist message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Jexi controls Phil's phone, work, social life, sex life, and romance. The female-coded AI is smarter, more forceful, and more active than the male lead, who stays dependent and often becomes the joke. Cate also guides Phil toward a better life. The film uses this woman-over-man pattern as a running comic idea, although it presents Jexi as dangerous rather than as a role model.
50%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story mocks phone addiction, clickbait media, and a bad boss. It does not make a modern activist attack on Western institutions, family life, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Jexi is an original story with no established character or canon to change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Other public reviews mostly argued about humor, phone addiction, crude content, and gender writing rather than woke or DEI politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Suzanne Todd has supported women and girls and has worked on projects about women's lives and lesbian experiences. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore have no recorded activist or identity-focused pattern. Cathy Sandrich Gelfond and Mark Kamine also have mainly craft-based profiles. The overall creator context is mild.
