Kabir Singh follows a brilliant medical student in Delhi who becomes a surgeon. Kabir falls hard for Preeti, a quiet junior student, and treats their relationship as something he owns. Her family separates them and pushes her toward an arranged marriage. Kabir answers the loss with rage, drinking, drugs, and reckless choices, so the romance turns into a dark story about a man who cannot control himself. The film includes a short argument that caste should not decide whom two lovers may marry. Kabir fights family pressure, but he also orders Preeti around, claims her as his own, and treats her silence as love. Preeti has little voice for much of the story, while Kabir’s anger, jealousy, and addiction drive most of the action. After he loses his career and nearly loses his family, he tries to change. Preeti leaves her husband, reveals that she is carrying Kabir’s child, and reunites with him, so the ending ties love to marriage, family, and fatherhood.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Kabir Singh.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast fits the film’s Indian college and family setting. The film does not present diversity casting or identity signaling as a message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Kabir says that caste should not decide whether two lovers can marry. The film returns to the family’s caste objection during the relationship and wedding conflict. The idea is clear but stays inside the romance and does not become a wider political speech. Most of the dialogue concerns anger, sex, addiction, and Kabir’s control.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
The romance challenges the family’s caste objection and its plan for Preeti’s arranged marriage. Preeti later leaves that marriage and chooses to return to Kabir. The film gives these choices some story weight, but it does not build them into a broad activist message. The main themes remain obsessive love, male control, addiction, and regret.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows Kabir’s male control and family pressure as personal and romance conflicts. It does not turn them into a modern activist attack on Western institutions, Christianity, capitalism, or traditional social life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The Hindi remake changes Arjun Reddy’s Telugu regional background into Kabir Singh’s Punjabi background. That is a small identity-related source change for the local audience. The film keeps the same male lead, core character, and love story.
8%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public criticism called the film misogynistic or regressive, rather than too woke or too focused on DEI. Right-leaning praise described the film as not woke, and that praise is not backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s public work centers on angry, tough male leads and troubled relationships, not DEI or activist causes. Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal have later discussed feminist writing and social issues. Their moderate context raises this factor a little, but Kabir Singh does not make those later causes its main story. The producers have mainly commercial records.
