Kevin Hart: What Now? follows Kevin Hart as he tries to surpass his last major stand-up show. Hart performs before about 53,000 people at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, which stands in his home city. A short spy story presents Hart as Agent 0054 at a high-stakes poker game with Halle Berry and Don Cheadle. The spy story begins before the concert and returns at the end. The main show turns Hart’s family life, marriage, children, money, fame, fears, and daily problems into loud adult jokes. Hart uses a fast, rude, playful, and self-mocking style as he chases a bigger stage.
The film includes a small amount of identity-focused material that viewers can see directly. Hart talks about his black children attending a mostly white private school. Hart jokes that his son has lost the street edge that Hart had while growing up. Hart ends the concert by recognizing the races, ethnicities, and nationalities in the crowd. Hart says that shared laughter can help people live and love together. These points are clear but brief, and the film does not build its story around race, gender, sexuality, or a political cause. Most of the movie stays with family stories, relationship jokes, sex jokes, fears, and Hart’s pride in his success.
