Charley Thompson is a lonely fifteen-year-old who lives in Oregon with his careless but loving father, Ray. After Ray is killed, Charley takes an aging racehorse named Lean on Pete and runs from the track. He travels through Oregon, Wyoming, and Colorado while trying to reach an aunt who may give him a home. The movie is a bleak and quiet road story about a boy who keeps going after adults and luck fail him.
The story repeatedly shows child poverty, homelessness, family breakdown, and adults who cannot protect a young person. The film treats these problems as signs that the American promise of safety and success has failed people on the edge. Bonnie is a skilled female jockey in a male-dominated racing world, and the men around her sometimes judge her because she is a woman. That gender conflict is a short side element, while Charley’s grief, survival, and bond with Pete remain the center of the film.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Lean on Pete.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The central cast is mostly white, and Bonnie’s role as a female jockey fits the horse-racing setting. The film does not present race, sexuality, or diversity as a reason for its casting.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about poverty, horse racing, family failure, and the American Dream. They do not deliver modern identity, DEI, or activist lines.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Bonnie is a skilled female jockey in a male-dominated racing world. The film shows men judging her because she is a woman, and Bonnie gives Charley advice from her hard-earned experience. This gender theme is brief, and the main story stays with poverty, grief, and survival.
17%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Charley repeatedly lacks family care, housing, steady work, and adult protection. The film presents poverty and homelessness as signs that vulnerable people are being left without help. Haigh also described the American Dream as failing people and called the lack of help a broken system. The movie does not turn this into a direct speech about capitalism, race, or party politics.
39%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The adaptation shortens some travel scenes and combines a few book roles, including Bonnie. No race, gender, sexuality, or hero-role change is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction. The reviewed news, audience posts, and reviews focus on sadness, poverty, performance, and horse suffering rather than woke or identity-politics complaints.

Creator track record context
Andrew Haigh has a strong record of queer-centered films and shows. Willy Vlautin often writes about working-class hardship, war, health care, and people on the edge. Producer Tristan Goligher has backed many queer or sexuality-focused stories with Haigh. Other cached producers and crew show a weaker pattern, so the context is meaningful but not dominant for this film.
