Seventeen-year-old Lina Emerson has just lost her mother and plans to start at MIT. She travels from the United States to Rome to honor her mother’s last wish and read the diary from her mother’s Italian summer. Lina meets two Italian boys, searches for the father she never knew, and tries to handle grief, family secrets, and first love. The movie uses bright streets, food, scooters, and gentle romance to create a light and emotional tone.
Most of the movie follows grief, family, romance, learning who Lina is, and the choice to build a life of her own. Lorenzo has two mothers who are a loving couple, and the film shows them kiss. Lorenzo also tells Lina that a former friend used a hurtful word for gay women against one of his mothers, which explains their broken friendship. This is a visible LGBTQ+ element, but it stays in a small supporting story and does not shape the main romance.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Love & Gelato.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film includes a black American best friend and mostly Italian characters in a modern story. It does not frame that casting as a diversity message or use a repeated representation-first pattern.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Lorenzo says that a former friend called one of his mothers a hurtful word for a gay woman. Lorenzo says Alessandro stood by and did nothing. The film treats the insult as wrong and uses it to explain their broken friendship. The exchange is brief and does not become a larger political speech.
22%
Identity-driven story themes
The film shows Lorenzo living with two mothers who love each other, and the women kiss on screen. Their family appears in a supporting dinner scene, and Lorenzo later mentions the same conflict when he explains his past. Lina’s main story stays about grief, family secrets, and romance. The LGBTQ+ theme is visible but not central.
30%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The movie does not attack Christianity, family life, men, capitalism, or Western institutions. Its conflicts involve grief, dating, parental absence, and a young man choosing cooking.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes the novel’s setting, love triangle, and career details, but those are ordinary plot changes. No confirmed race, gender, sexuality, or identity-based change to an established character was found.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Movieguide, a conservative family-review site, objected to the film’s same-sex mothers and described the treatment as politically correct and pro-homosexual. The complaint is clearly anti-left, but it comes from one review rather than a broad campaign. X research found no anti-woke reaction, and other audience complaints focused on changes from the book and weak romance.
15%
Creator track record context
Brandon Camp has a mainstream record with no clear activist pattern. Gennaro Formisano has a professional production record with no public identity-first profile. Viola Prestieri has backed several female-led and LGBTQ family stories. That gives mild creator track record context, but no title-specific activist framing was found.
