Luca is an animated movie about a young sea monster boy who hides his true identity to explore a human town in Italy. He makes close friends, builds a scooter, and enters a race while hiding his secrets. The movie contains strong metaphors about hiding who you really are from a town that does not accept you, which many people see as a story about coming out of the closet. The story also features two elderly women who live together and are revealed to be hiding their true nature as well.

Identity-driven story themes
The core story uses the sea monster idea as a strong metaphor for hiding your true self from a hostile town. This is widely seen as a closet metaphor where characters must hide their true nature. The movie ends with the characters being accepted by the town, which mirrors a coming-out story.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film does not feature a direct modern activist critique of Western institutions or Christianity. The human town shows traditional fear of sea monsters. This is solved through personal connection rather than an activist takedown of local culture.
