Lucy Cola is a NASA astronaut who returns home after a powerful and life-changing mission in space. She sees her old life as small and dull, even though her husband Drew is kind and her family needs her. Lucy trains for another flight while an affair with fellow astronaut Mark Goodwin pulls her away from home. Her work troubles, family losses, and growing fear of being left behind push her into a dangerous breakdown. The movie is a tense and strange drama about ambition, love, mental health, and the hard return to normal life.
The film puts a highly skilled woman at the center of a space program where men still judge women’s emotions. Lucy tells her niece that men make messes and women clean them up, while a NASA boss says Lucy is too emotional for another flight. Those lines make gender unfairness and women’s treatment at work clear parts of the story. The film also gives a black female astronaut, Erin Eccles, a visible rival role, and its romance is shown through Lucy’s feelings rather than a man’s view. These identity-focused choices matter to the film, but the main story remains Lucy’s personal collapse instead of a larger political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Lucy in the Sky.
Woke representation / casting
Lucy is a highly skilled female astronaut in the main role, and Erin Eccles is a black female astronaut with a visible place in the mission contest. The film’s marketing and interview coverage also frame Lucy as a strong woman and discuss the female gaze and women’s stories. These choices make gender representation an audience-visible part of the film. The cast is not built as a large diversity-first group, so the score remains moderate.
32%
Woke political dialogue
Lucy tells her niece that men make the mess and women clean it up. A NASA boss says Lucy is too emotional for another flight. The film presents those words as a gendered insult linked to Lucy’s anger. The dialogue is brief, but it shapes how the story presents her conflict.
33%
Identity-driven story themes
Lucy’s whole story follows a high-achieving woman trying to keep her place in a field shown as male-dominated. The film links her anger and breakdown to the way men dismiss her, judge her as emotional, and leave women to repair family problems. Lucy, her niece, and her grandmother form a small female support group. The film also shows Lucy cheating, making poor choices, and losing control, so it does not present a simple women-versus-men victory story.
47%
Western institutional / cultural critique
NASA is shown as judging Lucy through the label “too emotional” even though other workers also struggle. The film suggests that male coworkers can dismiss or distort a woman’s feelings. Lucy’s family memories repeat the complaint that unreliable men leave women with the mess. The movie does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or Western culture in a broad way, so this critique stays limited.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses fictional Lucy Cola and only loosely follows Lisa Nowak’s case. Its changes affect the target, motive, family, and ending, but they do not change an established character’s race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no relevant anti-woke reaction. Reddit and news discussion focused on the missing diaper detail, weak reviews, and confusion about the genre, not on DEI or identity politics.
0%
Creator track record context
Noah Hawley’s interview record for this film openly discusses gender, the male gaze, and the value of telling a woman’s story. Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea bring a mild women-centered production context. The writers and other producers have little public activist or DEI record. This gives the title some supporting context, but not a strong activist creator profile.
