Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Masters of the Universe.
Woke representation / casting
Diverse casting puts Idris Elba as black Man-At-Arms in a key mentor/general role and Camila Mendes as Latina Teela as a prominent warrior lieutenant and love interest. Supporting cast adds ethnic variety, and Earth scenes show modern diverse coworkers and a roommate. These choices stand out against the 1980s cartoon’s typical character looks, though He-Man stays traditionally cast.
38%
Woke political dialogue
A short comedic Earth scene shows Adam’s office nameplate with “He/Him” pronouns as a direct pun on becoming He-Man. It nods to real-world pronoun culture in a jokey way inside the story rather than any lecture or serious messaging.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
The core story sticks to classic fantasy ideas of destiny, inner power, friendship, loyalty, and good versus evil tyranny. Adam’s time on modern Earth adds fish-out-of-water humor and self-deprecation, but race, gender, or identity politics do not drive plots or character growth.
10%
Western institutional / cultural critique
No messaging critiques Western culture, traditional masculinity, family roles, or similar activist topics. The villain is a straightforward fantasy sorcerer with no modern political analogies or reframing.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Man-At-Arms receives a race change with Idris Elba, and Teela’s backstory emphasizes her as his adoptive daughter with a strong fighter role. Adam gets a modern Earth life with an HR job and diverse friends. These update the source for contemporary appeal but lack explicit ideological push in the narrative.
22%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
The trailer pronoun nameplate joke drew clear complaints from conservative and anti-woke voices online who saw it as unnecessary identity signaling or pandering. Some early labels called the project woke garbage, though audience reaction after release focused more on fun than sustained agenda criticism.
30%
Creator track record context
Travis Knight’s record and comments show low activist focus and a priority on positive adventure stories. Chris Butler brings a higher background from inclusive animated work, and a few producers tie to projects with social themes, but the overall team delivered broad-appeal fantasy here. Director comment about Skeletor symbolising toxic masculinity.
