Megan Leavey follows a troubled young woman who joins the U.S. Marines and becomes a military dog handler. She trains Rex, an aggressive German shepherd, and the pair serve together in Iraq. Their work includes dangerous missions that save lives. The film has a serious but warm tone, with its main focus on loyalty, duty, family, and healing after war.
The film presents Megan as a capable female Marine who earns her place through discipline and hard work. Her gender is part of the story, but the film does not turn her service into a broad political argument. The strongest message is that people and animals can help each other recover from trauma. The movie also shows Megan fighting to adopt Rex after their service, which gives the story a small empowerment theme.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Megan Leavey.
Woke representation / casting
Megan is a woman serving as the central Marine and combat dog handler. The marketing called attention to the rarity of a film about a female Marine. The story also shows her earning trust through training and service. The role is based on a real woman, so the casting does not appear to be a diversity-first invention.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film does not contain a recurring political debate about race, gender, capitalism, or modern identity politics. Military dialogue mainly covers training, missions, duty, and rules.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives a woman a brave and highly skilled military role. Megan’s struggle is partly about proving that she belongs in a demanding male-led institution. The story treats her success as earned through effort and discipline. The message is a mild female empowerment theme rather than a broad identity campaign.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows military rules, harsh training, and the pain caused by war. It does not present the Marines or wider Western institutions as systems built on oppression. Megan’s conflict with supervisors is personal and tied to her service record, not a modern attack on patriarchy or conservative culture.
8%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is based on a real person and real events. The main changes are normal choices made to shorten and shape the story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small right-leaning and veteran accounts complained that the real Marine and dog succeeded by meeting standards rather than receiving a political pass. The complaints were limited and had little reach. No major anti-woke campaign, boycott, or review attack was found.
10%
Creator track record context
Gabriela Cowperthwaite has a mild activist background through animal-rights and environmental work. Annie Mumolo and Pamela Gray have recurring female-centered writing credits. The creators do not have a strong public record of identity-politics activism tied to this film.
