Ethan Hunt returns with his IMF team to stop the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence that threatens to control the world’s nuclear weapons. The Entity grew from a secret government project and now reaches into computer and spy networks around the globe. Ethan must find a way to shut it down while Gabriel and government forces close in. The story moves from government offices and an aircraft carrier to a sunken submarine and the Arctic, with a serious tone and large action scenes. President Erika Sloane gives Ethan permission to act, while Admiral Neely and submarine captain Bledsoe help him reach the wreck. Grace, Paris, and Tapeesa each help the team in dangerous moments, and Grace plays a key part in the final plan. Several women and people of color hold important government, military, and action roles. Their roles support the mission, while Ethan remains the central hero and the main themes are trust, duty, human feeling, and the danger of AI.
