Chanteraide is a young French navy sonar expert known as a Golden Ear. He can identify ships by the sounds of their propellers, but one mistake puts his crew in deadly danger. When he investigates a strange signal, he uncovers a plan that could start a nuclear war between Russia and the West. The action moves through cramped submarines, naval bases, and cold seas, and the tone stays serious, tense, and focused.
The crew works as a close team, and each sailor must follow strict rules while facing fear and doubt. The story respects military duty and nuclear deterrence, but it also shows the danger of obeying a final order without checking the truth. Chanteraide must choose between trust in procedure and trust in his own ears. A short romance with Diane gives him a life outside the submarine, while loyalty, sacrifice, and the risk of nuclear war drive the ending.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Wolf's Call.
Woke representation / casting
Omar Sy, a Black French actor, plays D’Orsi, the second-in-command who later takes command. Reda Kateb also plays a senior commander. Baudry described the crew as a “deeply diverse” family and a “microcosm of France.” The modern French setting makes the roles believable, so the diversity signal is visible but limited rather than dominant.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue discusses nuclear deterrence, European defense, Russia, and military orders. It does not push identity, gender, DEI, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The central conflict follows a sailor’s mistake, guilt, skill, loyalty, and fear of nuclear war. The story does not build its message around race, gender, sexuality, or group identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film tests naval procedure when leaders receive false information. It still treats duty, command, teamwork, and the French Navy as serious institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses fictional submarines and an original military crisis. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small French forum post called the film “woke and bourgeois,” but it drew no visible follow-up. The separate X research found one small account saying Omar Sy’s casting filled diversity and wokism boxes. Neither complaint spread into a boycott, review-bombing campaign, or major news story.
12%
Creator track record context
Not present. Baudry’s cached record centers on diplomacy, French sovereignty, military strategy, and resistance to U.S. cultural dependence. The cached records for the listed producers, casting director, and script supervisor show no sustained DEI or identity-politics agenda.
