Morris Gentry is a 13-year-old boy from Richmond who moves to Heidelberg, Germany, with his widowed father, Curtis. Curtis coaches soccer while Morris struggles with German lessons, a new youth group, and a school world built around electronic dance music instead of his beloved hip-hop. Morris wants to become a rapper, but he also wants friends and the attention of Katrin, an older girl who keeps pulling him closer and pushing him away. The film uses quiet humor, awkward romance, family grief, and mild teen trouble to tell a gentle coming-of-age story.
Race is a clear part of Morris's life because he and Curtis are among the only black people in their German community. Other teens give Morris racist nicknames, a youth leader treats him as suspicious, and Katrin asks crude questions about black people. Morris also copies tough rap images that do not match his real life, and Curtis tells him to write from what he knows. These elements make identity, belonging, and casual racism important themes, but the story stays focused on father and son, first love, and finding an honest voice rather than a political program.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Morris from America.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a black father and a black son in the most visible roles. The story gives a clear reason for their identity because they are an American family living in Germany and Morris's race shapes his treatment there. The other major characters are mainly German teens and adults, so the film does not build a broad diversity lineup.
15%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The movie includes racist questions, insults, and crude jokes, but no character gives modern DEI, activist, or identity-politics talking points.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes Morris's black identity a repeated part of his struggle in Heidelberg. German teens give him racist nicknames, a youth leader treats him as suspicious, and Katrin asks ignorant questions about black people. Morris also copies tough rap images that do not fit his real life, and his father pushes him to speak honestly about his own experience. The story treats belonging and race as major parts of his growth, but it stays focused on family and first love instead of a political campaign.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie shows German teens using racist nicknames and a youth center leader judging Morris before knowing him. The story also shows Katrin treating his race as something strange or exciting. These scenes criticize casual prejudice in the local community. The film does not attack capitalism, religion, family life, or Western institutions as a whole.
27%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about Morris and Curtis. It does not change an established character or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reviews and audience posts mainly discuss the father-son bond, racism, and coming of age. No reliable anti-woke backlash or “too woke” complaint is documented.

Creator track record context
Chad Hartigan's earlier work is mostly intimate, character-focused drama, and his public record shows little activist campaigning. Several producers have worked on films about race, queer identity, migration, or other social issues. Other producers and the casting directors have weaker or neutral public signals. The mixed group gives this factor a mild score, not a strong one.
