Mike Sardina is a broke mechanic and former alcoholic who lives in Milwaukee and dreams of singing onstage. He meets Claire, a hairdresser and part-time singer, and the two fall in love while building a Neil Diamond tribute act called Lightning & Thunder. Their small shows grow into a brief run of bigger jobs, and their children become part of a new blended family. The warm music story then turns painful when a car crash takes Claire’s leg, pain pills damage her health, and Mike’s own heart and drinking problems return.
The film’s visible identity content is small. Claire works with Babs, a minor drag performer, and Mike’s daughter Angelina is played by queer and nonbinary musician King Princess, but the story does not make either identity a main issue. The central message is that love, music, marriage, and family can help people keep going through poverty, addiction, disability, mental illness, and grief. The tone moves from bright and funny performances to heavy family drama before ending with loyalty, remembrance, and a quiet sense of hope.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Song Sung Blue.
Woke representation / casting
The lead pair and the blended family follow the real Milwaukee story, so the main casting is not a representation message. The film also includes Babs, a minor drag performer, and casts King Princess, a public queer and nonbinary musician, as Mike’s daughter. These identity-linked choices are visible but do not shape the family or the band.
10%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about music, family, addiction, work, and loss. No one gives modern activist or identity-politics speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Babs appears as a drag performer in a small part of Claire’s work life. The film treats this as part of the music scene and does not build the plot around queer identity. The main emotional story follows a man and woman, their blended family, addiction, disability, and grief.
7%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows low pay, health problems, and family stress, but it does not turn them into a modern attack on capitalism, men, religion, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts a 2008 documentary and changes or leaves out some family details, but no identity-driven or DEI reason is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. X evidence showed only fringe posts calling the movie wholesome and free of DEI, plus a few complaints about King Princess’s identity. Those posts did not claim that the story itself pushes woke or LGBT politics, and no boycott or review-bombing effort appeared.
0%
Creator track record context
Craig Brewer’s past work includes gritty black and Southern stories, which gives a mild identity-focused context. Cached creator notes show no activist or identity-politics focus for Brewer, Greg Kohs, or the listed crew. Interviews about this film focused on family, music, underdogs, and real-life hardship.
