Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for My Old Ass.
Woke representation / casting
The protagonist Elliott is an out-and-proud lesbian who later discovers she is bisexual. Her friend group is diverse, including a queer black female friend named Ro. Because of the central queer character and themes, this is scored aggressively in the high range. Under our scoring rules, any prominent LGBTQ+ character or storyline receives a substantial automatic point boost.
72%
Woke political dialogue
The movie contains typical Gen Z banter, including casual jokes directed at straight people and white men. There are also explicit conversations about sexuality, labels, and queer identity. In one key scene, Elliott's friend reassures her that falling for a man does not make her "less queer". These dialogue choices align closely with modern progressive ideas.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie is about an 18-year-old girl navigating her sexual identity. Her journey from identifying strictly as a lesbian to discovering her attraction to a man is a core part of the story. Our rules state that any project with front-and-center queer themes must be scored in the 70-100 range with a major point boost, reflecting this prominent narrative focus.
74%
Western institutional / cultural critique
There is very little systemic critique of Western institutions. The story actually highlights family connection and appreciation of one's hometown as positive themes. However, it gently undermines traditional social and relationship expectations by portraying fluid Gen Z sexuality and casual drug use as completely normal and unproblematic.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original story, not an adaptation of an existing property, so no characters or canon were changed.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was no major organized anti-woke campaign against this movie. A few right-leaning viewers and critics noted that the film's opening minutes felt heavy-handed with "performative wokeness," casual drug use, and small jokes mocking straight white men. However, the overall online backlash from the right was very minimal.

Creator track record context
Writer-director Megan Park has a strong track record of creating progressive, queer-inclusive teen dramas. The film is also backed by LuckyChap Entertainment, a production company co-founded by Margot Robbie that focuses on feminist-centric projects. This gives the overall creative team a moderately strong progressive footprint.
