No Way Up follows Ava, the daughter of California's governor, as she flies to Mexico with her boyfriend, his friend, and her bodyguard. A flock of birds causes the plane to crash into the Pacific, where the wreck rests beside a deep underwater ravine. Ava and a small group survive inside an air pocket while the plane sinks and sharks circle outside. Ava's fear of drowning, caused by her mother's death, adds a personal layer to the tense and bloody escape story.
Ava starts as a sheltered young woman who depends on her father, bodyguard, and other men to guide her. The disaster pushes her to make plans, protect Rosa, and lead the escape, so female courage and leadership matter to her arc. Mardy, an older former army nurse, and Rosa also get useful survival moments. The group includes a gay flight attendant and a black boyfriend, and another survivor makes cruel jokes about the flight attendant. These identity elements stay inside the survival plot and do not become a larger political message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for No Way Up.
Woke representation / casting
The cast puts a black male lead named Jed, a gay flight attendant named Danilo, a woman lead, an older woman, and a young girl in the main survivor group. These identities are easy to notice because the group carries most of the film. The Los Angeles to Mexico trip makes a mixed group believable, and no title interview says that diversity was a casting goal. The pattern gives a mild representation signal, but it does not look like a planned diversity lineup.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The survivors talk about danger, fear, family, and escape. The film has no clear modern activist or identity-politics speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Ava starts as a sheltered governor's daughter who relies on her father and bodyguard. The crash pushes her to make plans, protect Rosa, and lead the escape. Mardy and Rosa also get important survival moments, while Danilo is a gay flight attendant who faces cruel jokes from Kyle. The film presents these changes as personal survival and growth, not as a wider activist message.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film does not attack modern Western institutions, family life, religion, or traditional gender roles. Ava's governor father and bodyguard mainly explain why she starts sheltered.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie uses new characters and a new survival plot. It does not change established canon or a known historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
OutKick promoted the trailer as better than the “woke garbage” it says Hollywood makes. One small reply preferred it to mainstream movies that feel “preached at.” No reported post called No Way Up itself woke or DEI-driven. The supplied X pass found only fringe comments and no boycott or review-bombing campaign.
10%
Creator track record context
Claudio Fäh has a supplied score of 0 and no high-confidence public record of activist or DEI work. Andy Mayson has a supplied score of 17, and most other listed creators are also between 0 and 17. A few producers worked on queer, interracial, Indigenous, or mental-health stories, but their profiles show no personal DEI campaigns. The title interviews focus on practical filming, fear, and Ava's survival arc rather than social activism.
