Steve Ford is a Venice Beach private detective who lives like an aging surfer and spends too much time chasing women, drinking, and giving advice to younger people. His life turns into a messy crime chase when gang members steal Buddy, the dog he loves. Steve must deal with Spyder’s gang, stolen drugs and cash, loan sharks, angry brothers, and a friend going through a divorce. The movie uses crude jokes, loose action, and a shaggy crime-story tone.
The film has a short opening voice-over that says tech companies are pushing local dive bars out of Venice Beach. That complaint is a small part of the film and does not shape Steve’s main goal. The story spends far more time on sex jokes, drugs, guns, gang deals, nudity, and loyalty to a pet. It also uses a Jewish property seller and a man in a dress as crude joke figures, so viewers should expect rough old-style comedy rather than a serious message about identity.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Once Upon a Time in Venice.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The movie uses a mixed cast in modern Los Angeles, including Samoan characters and several minority supporting actors. The film does not frame that casting as diversity, empowerment, or identity politics.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The opening voice-over says a tech company is pushing local dive bars out of Venice Beach. The line gives a brief anti-corporate and neighborhood-change message. The film does not return to that idea in the main dog-and-gang story.
21%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows a male detective, his friends, and gang members while he tries to get his dog back. It does not build its main conflict around race, gender, sexuality, DEI, or activist identity themes.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The opening narration complains that tech companies are replacing the local life of Venice Beach. The idea appears for only a short moment. The film does not turn it into a continuing attack on Western institutions, family life, religion, or social rules.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original Venice Beach crime comedy with no established source character or historical figure being rewritten.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke posts, boycott, or review-bombing. Wider reviews focused on weak jokes, poor story, and crude stereotypes rather than woke or DEI claims.
0%
Creator track record context
Mark and Robb Cullen are linked to mainstream comedy and have no known activist record in the cached context. Most listed producers and Michelle Wade Byrd also have low or no activist signals. Casting director Mary Vernieu has spoken about representation and diverse role models, but no title-specific identity message is reported. The overall creator track record signal is low.
