Otherhood follows Carol, Gillian, and Helen, three longtime friends whose grown sons forget Mother's Day. The mothers leave their homes in Poughkeepsie and drive to New York City to force a visit and repair their family ties. Carol is a lonely widow, Gillian is a pushy piano teacher, and Helen is a divorced mother who fears getting older. The film uses broad jokes, drinking, sex talk, and warm but messy family drama.
The story gives its strongest attention to women who must decide who they are after raising children. The mothers repeatedly say that a woman needs a life beyond being a mother, and they are pushed toward friendship, dating, fun, and personal freedom. One son is gay, lives with his boyfriend, and has donated sperm to a lesbian couple, which creates a clear LGBTQ+ family subplot. These ideas shape the family conflicts, but the film remains a mother-son comedy rather than a political story or a queer-centered story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Otherhood.
Woke representation / casting
The three main roles are women over 50, and the movie keeps them at the center of nearly every scene. Interviews and promotion present the cast as a female-focused story about women in midlife. The Black, Jewish, and white mix fits a modern New York-area setting, so it does not look like a strong place mismatch. The gender-focused casting gives a mild representation signal, but it is not an overwhelming diversity design.
18%
Woke political dialogue
The mothers repeatedly talk about how motherhood shapes a woman's identity after the children leave. They call the new stage “otherhood” and say being a mother requires action. Helen says gay people should not have to confess their sexuality to parents. Paul says gay men and lesbians can make a family without straight people setting the rules. These lines are clear identity-driven dialogue, but they appear in a few scenes rather than throughout the film.
45%
Identity-driven story themes
Three mothers drive the whole story as they try to rebuild lives beyond raising children. The movie presents friendship, dating, sex, travel, and personal choice as ways for women to recover a self outside the home. The mothers control the trip and receive most of the emotional attention, while the sons are often selfish, immature, or secretive. Paul's boyfriend and his sperm donation to a lesbian couple add a smaller LGBTQ+ family theme. This message is central and recurring, even though the movie is not queer-centered.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie questions the old idea that a woman's main purpose ends when she raises children. The mothers are encouraged to accept aging, date, have sex, and build lives that do not depend on their sons. One joke says divorce often gives men younger partners while women get older ones. The story challenges family and gender expectations, but it does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or other Western institutions.
31%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie changes the source novel's place from Britain to New York, but no identity-related change to a character is confirmed. The gay son and his lesbian-parent storyline were already in the novel.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account said the film was fine if viewers ignored its “woke elements.” A faith-based review objected to the gay son, the lesbian couple, and the film's loose moral view. The visible reach was small, and no boycott or review-bombing appeared. Most larger discussion focused on controlling mothers, family boundaries, weak jokes, and Felicity Huffman's legal scandal.

Creator track record context
Stored context gives Cindy Chupack a score of 26, Mark Andrus 0, and William Sutcliffe 15. Several producers have stronger social or identity-related records, including Patricia Arquette at 67, Felicity Huffman at 58, and Angela Bassett at 49. The women-centered story and gay-family subplot fit part of that background. The full creative group is mixed, so this context supports the score without making the film mainly activist.
