Pearl is a young woman stuck on a family farm in Texas in 1918. Her husband is away at war, her father cannot move, and her strict mother keeps her home during the Spanish flu. She dreams of fame like the movie stars she loves, but her anger and violent urges grow. The film looks bright and old-movie colorful while telling a dark horror story about ambition and madness.
The story stays on Pearl’s personal hunger for a bigger life and her breakdown when that dream is blocked. Her fights with her mother, her secret killings, and her failed dance tryout drive the plot as private family and fame drama. Viewers see a lonely farm girl who turns killer, not a lesson about modern identity groups or political causes. The film is about one person’s twisted dream of being a star.
