Eight-year-old Nelly is grieving after her grandmother dies. She travels with her parents to the grandmother’s old home, where the family sorts through her things. When Nelly’s mother leaves because the grief is too heavy, Nelly meets a girl named Marion in the nearby woods. The girl is Nelly’s mother as a child, so the quiet fantasy lets them spend time together.
The film puts three generations of women at the center and makes the mother and daughter meet as equals. Nelly comforts her sad mother, and the two girls share the main adventure as they play, build a hut, and talk about fear and family. This female-centered reversal of the usual adult-child roles is the clearest woke-leaning element. The story keeps that idea inside a private family tale about grief, memory, and empathy across generations.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Petite Maman.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main family is white and French. The twin sisters are cast because the mother and daughter need to look alike, which serves the plot rather than a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters talk about death, sadness, fear, family, and an operation. The film does not give identity, DEI, or activist ideas through its dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film puts three generations of women at the center of the story. Nelly cares for her sad mother, and the two girls meet as equals while they play and build a hut. The story gives girls unusual power to understand and comfort adults, reversing the usual parent-child order. This theme runs through the film, but it stays inside a private family story about grief instead of becoming a current political message.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a grieving mother, a kind father, and a family dealing with death. It does not attack Christianity, capitalism, men, or Western family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story and does not change an established character, a book character, or a real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small French right-leaning X account called the film a “gauchiste woke” dud because Libération liked it and Le Figaro did not. The post had about one like and 119 views, so it did not spread. A second “woke left” post was a sarcastic date joke about Barack Obama, not a complaint about the film itself. No sustained anti-woke campaign, boycott, or review-bombing was found.

Creator track record context
Céline Sciamma has a cached woke score of 87/100 because her career repeatedly centers feminist, queer, gender, and representation themes. Bénédicte Couvreur and Christel Baras have cached scores of 67/100 and 64/100 because their work often supports women-led and representation-focused projects. This is strong creator context, although Petite Maman itself is much less political than Sciamma’s most identity-centered films.
