Polaroid follows Bird Fitcher, a shy high school student who loves photography and works in an antique shop. A co-worker gives her a rare old camera, and she soon learns that a dark figure appears in its pictures. Anyone marked in a picture is hunted and killed, so Bird and her friends search the camera’s past before the curse reaches them. The movie uses a cold small-town setting, school parties, police stations, and a darkroom to build a tense but familiar teen horror story.
The clearest identity element is Kasey, Bird’s close friend, who says her mother is praying that her sexual identity will change. The film treats the mother’s reaction as hurtful, but the subject appears in only a few lines and never becomes the main conflict. The rest of the story centers on bullying, sexual abuse, shame, grief, revenge, and the danger of taking pictures. Bird solves the curse through courage and careful thinking, then destroys the ghost in the school darkroom.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Polaroid.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main group includes boys and girls from different backgrounds, but that mix fits a modern American high school. The movie does not frame the casting as a diversity goal.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film has one short exchange about Kasey’s sexual identity. Kasey says her mother is praying for her to change, and Bird says that reaction is hurtful. The movie does not return to the subject in speeches or political debates.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
Kasey is a queer teen who has recently come out, and her mother does not accept her. The film treats that family response as painful and gives Kasey a few lines about getting away to college. The main story remains a ghost hunt about bullying, shame, grief, and revenge, so the identity theme stays a small subplot.
28%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The sheriff’s lies, the abusive father, and the school history serve the ghost mystery. The movie does not turn them into a modern attack on police, family, religion, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie expands Lars Klevberg’s own 2015 short with more teen characters and backstory. It does not recast or rewrite a known franchise character or a real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No anti-woke complaints were found in the available X pass or in wider coverage. Public reaction instead focuses on jump scares, weak plot, acting, and the long release delay.
0%
Creator track record context
The stored score for Lars Klevberg is 8/100, and the stored score for Blair Butler is 18/100. Klevberg’s interview links the camera to smartphone use, social-media habits, and the wish to look good in pictures. The stored producer and casting notes show no strong activist or identity-driven pattern.
