Prey for the Devil follows Sister Ann, a young nun who works as a nurse at a Church-run exorcism school in Boston. The school trains priests, but it bars nuns from learning the full rite. Ann joins Father Dante to help Natalie, a troubled girl who may be possessed by the same demon that hurt Ann’s mother. Ann’s past, including a teenage pregnancy and giving up her child, becomes part of the final fight. The film mixes jump scares, religious horror, family pain, and a serious tone.
The clearest woke element is the gender story. Ann must challenge a male-only Church rule, and the film presents her as the first woman allowed to train as an exorcist. Her caring method puts the victim before old rules and treats the Church’s tradition as outdated. The plot gives Ann the key heroic role while male priests mainly support her or fail to solve the case. This message is central to the training conflict, but the film still treats Christian prayer, God’s love, and holy water as real forces.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Prey for the Devil.
Woke representation / casting
The lead role goes to Sister Ann, a nun who becomes the movie’s first female exorcist. Her gender is not a side detail because the story makes the male-only training rule her main barrier. Father Quinn is black and Father Dante is Latino, but race is not a major issue in the plot. The visible casting emphasis is strongest in the central female role, not in a broad diversity-first ensemble.
32%
Woke political dialogue
The priests say that only male clerics may study and perform exorcisms. Sister Ann asks why a woman cannot be the first and argues that a nurse can still help without the full rite. Church leaders answer with old rules about women praying, comforting, and showing mercy. These exchanges make gender access inside the Church a clear part of the movie’s dialogue.
29%
Identity-driven story themes
Sister Ann’s central goal is to become the first female exorcist. The Church blocks her because she is a woman, so she must challenge a male-only system before she can save Natalie. The film presents her focus on the victim’s pain and empathy as a better way to fight possession. The story ties her victory to facing shame, motherhood, and her past instead of obeying old rules.
53%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Church is shown as an old male institution that keeps women from a major religious role. The story recalls past Church torture of women and shows leaders keeping records of failed cases secret. Ann says exorcists should see the person, not only the demon, which attacks the institution’s cold methods. The film still treats Christian prayer, God’s love, and holy water as real powers, so its critique targets Church rules and methods rather than Christianity itself.
41%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original exorcism story and does not change an established character, canon, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some horror viewers called the marketing anti-man or feminist and objected to the “girl boss” treatment of Ann. A Catholic discussion called the woman-led and minority-led cast a political-correctness checklist. Other viewers praised the female exorcist or saw the movie as ordinary possession horror. The complaints were scattered and did not become a large news controversy.

Creator track record context
Daniel Stamm has a cached 46/100 score because his work includes the female-led Prey for the Devil and other occasional gender-barrier themes. The cached scores for Robert Zappia, Earl Richey Jones, and Todd Jones are low, and the producers and casting directors also have no clear activist record. The available creator context supports a moderate signal from the director, not a broad pattern across the whole team.
