Trap follows Philadelphia firefighter Cooper Abbott as he takes his teenage daughter Riley to a Lady Raven pop concert as a reward for good grades. Heavy security and an FBI presence soon make clear that the arena is a sting. Profilers believe the serial killer known as the Butcher will attend the show. Cooper is the Butcher, and the film follows him trying to stay one step ahead while keeping Riley in the dark. He steals a vendor badge and radio, creates diversions, and works toward a backstage exit while Lady Raven, Cooper's wife Rachel, and FBI profiler Dr. Josephine Grant drive the manhunt.
The film is a high-concept cat-and-mouse thriller about a double life, family betrayal, and escape. It is not an identity-politics drama. Story energy stays on thriller logistics and family rather than systemic oppression or identity liberation. A brief gay flirt from Kid Cudi's cameo as The Thinker and capable women in the manhunt appear without driving an activist message. Police and the FBI are competent and ultimately capture him, and Cooper is framed as a psychopath rather than a stand-in for ordinary men.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Trap.
Woke representation / casting
The lead is a white male serial killer dad. A female FBI profiler runs the manhunt and Lady Raven becomes an active foil. Kid Cudi's brief cameo as flirty gay rapper The Thinker is the clear identity beat. Otherwise the cast is a modern Philly concert lineup, with Saleka cast mainly as the director's singer daughter rather than as a diversity campaign.
22%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. Dialogue stays on the sting, escape, family cover, and profiler psychology with no activist speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The core premise is a killer trapped at a concert while protecting his dual life and daughter. Story energy is thriller logistics and family, not systemic oppression or identity liberation. A short gay flirt and capable women in the manhunt appear without driving an activist message.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Police and the FBI are competent and ultimately capture him. Family love is real and morally serious. The film is not framed as an attack on Western institutions, faith, or traditional masculinity as a class. Cooper is a psychopath, not a stand-in for ordinary men.
5%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. this is an entirely original story.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was no major sustained too-woke campaign. Sparse posts jab at Lady Raven as a girl-boss vanity arc or joke that Shyamalan is a DEI hire. Conservative-leaning write-ups more often call it a non-ideological or values-mixed thriller flop than propaganda.
8%
Creator track record context
Cached profiles put Shyamalan and longtime producers and casting partners in the low teens or below. The team is known more for genre craft and education commentary than identity activism, so the team reads as low activist context for this title.
