The Neighbor follows John, an army veteran who lives with his wife, Rosie, in the small town of Cutter, Mississippi. John and Rosie work in a drug operation while saving money to leave town. When Rosie vanishes, John enters the home of their secretive neighbor, Troy, and finds kidnapped people in the basement. The rescue turns into a violent fight against Troy, his sons, and a corrupt police officer.
The movie focuses on crime, fear, family loyalty, and survival rather than modern political ideas. John and Rosie are criminals, but the story lets viewers care about them because they are trapped by worse people. Rosie is not helpless, since she fights back and helps John escape, but John remains the main rescuer. A black female police officer has a supporting role, yet the film does not make race, gender, sexuality, or diversity part of its message.
