13 Cameras follows newlyweds Ryan and Claire after they move into a suburban rental house while waiting for their first child. Their marriage is already weak, and Ryan starts an affair while Claire tries to keep the family together. Their landlord, Gerald, has hidden cameras in the house and watches them from a secret room. The movie is a grim, dirty horror thriller about spying, cheating, fear, and the loss of privacy.
The story's gender-related material centers on Ryan's sexual selfishness and Gerald's control of Claire, while both men are shown as bad or disturbing. Claire's pregnancy raises the pressure on a marriage that is already failing. The hidden cameras drive the main horror plot and turn private life into a source of danger. The movie's strongest ideas concern spying, personal privacy, cheating, and the fear that a landlord can enter a renter's life.
