Dead Sea follows Kaya Adams as she cares for her father and younger brother after her mother dies. Kaya joins her best friend Tessa Miles and two young men on a jet ski trip from the Florida Keys toward the Bahamas. A crash kills Julian and badly injures Xander, which leaves Kaya and Tessa drifting in the open sea. A fishing boat rescues them, but Captain Rey and Dr. Curtis Hunt reveal that the boat supports an illegal organ trade. Kaya must free Tessa, contact the Coast Guard, and survive the criminals.
The story shows two young women facing violent male criminals together. Kaya leads the final fight, and Tessa uses her swimming skills while planning to study marine science. Their friendship gives the movie its emotional center as they face grief, family duty, and fear. The movie includes race, gender, and family problems as parts of the characters’ lives, but it does not present them as political causes. The main themes come from captivity, surgery, stabbing, organ selling, and a desperate escape at sea.
