Mikey Saber is a washed-up adult film star who hits rock bottom in Los Angeles and rides a bus back to his old hometown in Texas City, Texas. He talks his way into staying with his estranged wife Lexi and her mother. He hustles odd jobs, sells weed, and charms people so they help him. He becomes obsessed with Strawberry, a 17-year-old doughnut shop worker, and tries to pull her into a plan that would help him climb back into the porn business. The tone is darkly funny, sweaty, and uneasy.
The movie is mainly about a selfish con man who uses charm, sex, and lies to get what he wants. Viewers will notice a strong focus on male entitlement and a creepy age-gap relationship. It is set in summer 2016 with Trump on TV and campaign signs in the background, so some people read it as a picture of that moment in America. The story sits in the adult film and sex-work world and treats hustling and exploitation as everyday facts of that life. It is not built around race lectures, pride messaging, or diversity-first casting as the main point. The strongest “woke-adjacent” notes are the toxic-male main character, the power imbalance with a teenage girl, and the light Trump-era political texture, not a full activist agenda.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Red Rocket.
Woke representation / casting
Leads are white. Supporting locals include a black weed-dealer boss, a tough Latina enforcer, and a small Asian shopkeeper role. Casting looks like Texas Gulf Coast location hiring and non-pro finds, not a marketing push about diversity quotas or “first black X” hero roles. Light background mix only.
3%
Woke political dialogue
Politics show up more as TV noise, Trump audio, and campaign signs than as long activist speeches. Characters rarely argue party lines. Baker said the 2016 setting was to underline division and media-style politics, not to deliver a clear speech. Light, background, easy to miss if you only follow the hustle plot.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
Core story is a male user who exploits women and friends for money and status in and around porn. Sex work, poverty, and a power-skewed age-gap romance are central. That is gender and exploitation storytelling, not a race-swap or queer-identity plot. No confirmed LGBTQ plotline. Noticeable power/gender themes; not a DEI manifesto.
22%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mikey is pure male entitlement: he lies, freeloads, and treats people as tools. The 2016 Trump-era backdrop and “American hustler” frame invite some viewers to see a wider jab at celebrity politics and broken small-town America. Not a church attack or full anti-capitalist tract. Strong character-level critique of a bad man; moderate wider political flavor.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Public fight was mostly about the 17-year-old relationship and whether the film is too soft on a predator. That is moral/age-gap criticism, not a major right-leaning wave calling the film woke, DEI, or identity propaganda. No solid anti-woke complaint record to score.
0%
Creator track record context
Key writers have a mid-level history of sex-work and underclass stories, including the clearly queer/trans-centered *Tangerine*. Producer list is mostly low on activism, with a few higher marks (e.g. *Promising Young Woman* producer). Overall moderate context that fits social-realist margins more than hard DEI branding for this film.
