Ricky Gervais performs alone at the London Palladium in this 2022 stand-up special. He moves from jokes about comedy rules to stories about cats, family, death, religion, sex, health, and famous people. His main conflict is with the idea that modern audiences should place limits on what a comedian may say. The tone is dark, rude, self-aware, and often built around shock.
Gender and identity politics shape the opening and return later in long jokes about trans women, pronouns, bathrooms, body parts, and a pretend trans lesbian version of Gervais. He says he supports trans rights and that people should live as the gender they feel, but he quickly turns that support into a crude punchline. He also attacks cancel culture, woke comedy, virtue signalling, and the idea that words are violence. A long atheist section mocks God, religion, and belief in the supernatural, while much of the rest focuses on animals, aging, family, illness, and human behavior.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ricky Gervais: SuperNature.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The special shows one performer, Ricky Gervais, and does not build a cast around identity representation.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The special includes direct lines about trans rights, preferred pronouns, and choosing one's gender. Gervais presents those lines as a brief defense before turning them into crude jokes. The larger political talk attacks cancel culture, woke comedy, and identity politics. The woke part is specific but limited because the message is mostly anti-woke.
18%
Identity-driven story themes
The special spends a noticeable early section on trans identity and sex-gender arguments, then returns to them in a long pretend story about Gervais becoming a trans lesbian. It also uses jokes about trans women, bathrooms, pronouns, and body parts. The special treats these subjects as culture-war targets rather than as an inclusion story. The identity focus is clear, but the message is mainly hostile to woke arguments.
34%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The special spends a long section arguing that God and the supernatural are not real. Gervais mocks religion and religious belief instead of affirming them. He also makes a joke about Muslim family control and attacks modern social rules around comedy. The material is cultural and atheist rather than a broad activist attack on Western institutions.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The special is original stand-up material and does not change established characters, canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Right-leaning reaction praised the special as anti-woke, and no major complaint said that SuperNature pushed woke or DEI content.
0%
Creator track record context
The cached scores are 11 for John L. Spencer, 9 for Ricky Gervais, 18 for Clyde Holcroft, and 4 for Duncan Hayes. The group has no clear sustained activist or DEI profile. Gervais is better known for mocking political correctness than promoting it. This keeps the creator context low.
