Rust follows Lucas Hollister, a teenage boy who cares for his younger brother on the harsh American frontier of the 1880s. Lucas accidentally kills a rancher while trying to shoot a wolf, and a judge sentences him to hang. His estranged grandfather, the outlaw Harland Rust, breaks him out of jail and leads him toward Mexico while a marshal and bounty hunters chase them. Long rides, gunfights, cruel law, and family secrets give the film a grim and slow Western tone.
The story builds its main bond between two damaged men who do not trust each other at first. Lucas must face guilt over the death, while Rust must face the harm caused by his violent past. Family duty, mercy, grief, and the cost of killing shape their journey. The hard court, the Bible-carrying bounty hunter, and the many battles make the frontier feel dangerous, while the journey places family and redemption beside fear and violence.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Rust.

Not present. Characters talk about law, family duty, guilt, and survival. The film does not use modern activist, party, or identity politics dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Rust centers on an accidental killing, a harsh sentence, and a broken grandfather-grandson bond. Its themes are guilt, mercy, grief, and survival rather than race, sex, sexuality, or group identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows a harsh court, violent men, and a Bible-carrying bounty hunter. Those elements belong to its old-fashioned Western story and are not framed as a modern attack on family, religion, or Western institutions.

0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints

Creator track record context
Alec Baldwin is a co-writer, producer, and lead actor with a public progressive and civil-rights advocacy record. The cached profile rates him 68/100 and notes his support for diverse casting and gay and women’s rights. Joel Souza has no widely documented activist or DEI record. Most other cached producers have low scores, with a few liberal or humanitarian links. This gives the film some creator-context risk, but the film itself does not show that agenda.
