Shadow in the Cloud follows Maude Garrett, a flight officer who boards a B-17 bomber in 1943 with a sealed case. The crew sends her into the lower gun turret and doubts her warnings about a Japanese plane and a gremlin on the wing. Maude fights the creature, survives attacks, and tries to keep the case safe while the bomber crosses the Pacific. The film starts as a tight, tense war thriller and then turns into a loud, strange monster action movie.
The movie makes sexism a main part of Maude’s danger. The male crew uses sexual jokes, calls her hysterical, and ignores her skill until she proves herself by shooting down an enemy plane. Maude is also escaping an abusive husband and protecting her baby, so the story links female strength to both work and motherhood. She becomes the main fighter, rescuer, and final killer of the gremlin, while the men often look foolish or helpless. The end credits show real women who served in wartime air forces, making the female-empowerment message hard to miss.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Shadow in the Cloud.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts Chloë Grace Moretz at the center as a female World War II flight officer who fights, shoots, and takes command. The crew around her is almost all male, which makes the gender contrast part of the setup. Interviews and promotion frame Maude as a new female action hero and stress a woman’s view of war. Women did serve in wartime air work, but Maude’s frontline combat role and repeated heroic feats are unusual for the period shown.
40%
Woke political dialogue
The crew repeatedly uses sexual jokes and insults about Maude over the radio. The men call her hysterical and refuse to believe her warnings because she is a woman. Maude answers with a direct defense of her ability and later gives orders during the crisis. The dialogue shows sexism, but it does not become a long speech about laws, parties, or modern politics.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes Maude’s fight to be believed as a woman a main part of the danger. The story treats sexual harassment and male dismissal as threats alongside enemy planes and the gremlin. The story also makes escape from an abusive husband and protection of her baby part of her heroic journey. The ending joins female strength, motherhood, and survival to the film’s final victory.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film treats the bomber crew as a male group that mocks, sexualizes, and silences the lone woman. The men’s private jokes are shown as harmful because they stop the crew from hearing warnings about real danger. The film also presents Maude’s husband as an abusive form of male power and gives her escape from him a heroic place. This is a direct critique of male entitlement and old gender roles, but it does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or broad Western institutions.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original wartime monster story. It uses the old gremlin legend and real World War II background, but it does not rewrite an established character or canon for identity reasons.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some audience posts call the film an on-the-nose feminist movie, man-bashing, or a propaganda-style story. Some complaints focus on Maude’s near-superhuman feats and the final scene where she feeds the baby as proof that the film pushes a feminist message. Other viewers say the sexism fits the 1940s or treat the movie as campy monster fun. The complaints are scattered online, and major news coverage focused more on the strange tone and Max Landis controversy.

Creator track record context
Roseanne Liang has a cached woke score of 65/100 and a record of supporting Asian filmmakers and discussing gender gaps. Max Landis has a cached score of 11/100 and is mainly linked to genre writing without an identity-first record. Liang directed and rewrote much of this film, so her feminist work adds more context than the lower-scored writing history. The other cached crew scores are mostly low.
