Danielle is a college student who goes with her parents to a Jewish shiva, a house gathering after a funeral. She is hiding a secret: she has a sugar daddy who pays her for sex. That man shows up at the same house with his wife and baby. Her successful ex-girlfriend is also there. The movie stays in one house for almost the whole story and feels tight, awkward, and funny, like a panic attack turned into a comedy.
A normal viewer will clearly notice the queer side of the story. Danielle is bisexual. She flirts, fights, kisses, and reconnects with her ex-girlfriend Maya, and the movie ends with them close again. The writer-director said she made the longer film so young bi women would feel seen, and outlets and marketing often sold it as a queer and bi story. Sex work is shown as a real part of Danielle’s life without a big moral lecture, and family pressure about who she should be is a constant joke. The film is not mainly about race quotas or long political speeches, but the bi identity and same-sex romance are easy to see and are a big part of how the story is told.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Shiva Baby.
Woke representation / casting
Lead and love interest are written as bisexual women in the center of the cast. That is clear identity casting for a bi story, not a race-quota blockbuster pattern. The house is mostly a white Jewish community world that fits the setting. Queer roles in the main spots still raise this above incidental diversity.
48%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is mostly family nosiness, hiding sex work, and soft pushback on Danielle’s bi past (“no funny business”). A “girlboss” dig and a throwaway Israel/Palestine joke appear, but there are no long activist speeches. Viewers hear identity-tinged lines more as comedy than as a lecture.
28%
Identity-driven story themes
Bisexuality is baked into the plot: ex-girlfriend conflict, kiss, reconnection, and creative intent to center bi women. Sex work and young-woman self-worth through sex are major threads. LGBTQ weight is high because queer identity is audience-visible and story-shaping, even while the movie is also a family farce.
76%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film teases pushy family rules, “nice Jewish girl” pressure, and parents who say they are fine with queerness until it is their kid. That is light modern push on traditional family and gender norms, not a full attack on Western institutions or capitalism.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No meaningful wave of right-leaning or anti-woke complaints that the film pushes DEI or identity politics. Coverage is mostly praise; “not queer enough” takes do not count here.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached listed crew are mostly non-activist (0–15). The real author of the film, Emma Seligman, openly built this title around bi visibility and queer emotional stakes and continued queer comedy work after. That title-linked creative pattern is the main lift for this factor.
