Jenny is a music writer in New York who gets her dream job in San Francisco. Her boyfriend of nine years ends their relationship because he will not move with her. Jenny spends one last wild day with her best friends Blair and Erin before she leaves the city. The movie mixes breakup sadness with jokes, music, drugs, sex, and warm friendship.
The story puts three women at the center and treats their friendship, careers, and personal choices as more important than keeping a romance together. Jenny chooses her career and learns to live without Nate. Erin works through fear of commitment with her girlfriend Leah, so the movie includes a clear lesbian relationship. The movie also uses direct feminist ideas about the patriarchy, women being judged, and rejecting old gender rules. These ideas recur in jokes, clothing, relationship talks, and the ending, but the movie remains a light breakup comedy rather than a political drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Someone Great.
Woke representation / casting
The lead group includes Latina Jenny, Black Erin, and white Blair, and all three women drive the movie. Jenny and Nate are an interracial couple, and Erin’s relationship with Leah adds another prominent identity focus. Modern New York can plausibly support this cast, so the mix is not a strong story-world mismatch. The repeated use of women of different identities in central roles makes representation visible, but the design is not overwhelming.
46%
Woke political dialogue
Jenny calls herself a career girl and says she is doing the damn thing. The women joke that men are great only until they have to be great. Erin rejects putting her relationship with Leah inside “heteronormative labels.” The movie spreads these identity and gender lines through banter rather than a long speech, so the political dialogue is recurring but limited.

Identity-driven story themes
Female friendship is the movie’s main emotional center. Jenny chooses a dream job and a new life instead of rebuilding her old romance. Blair leaves a safe but dull relationship, and Erin learns to be honest with Leah. The movie treats sexual freedom, female friendship, and self-worth as positive parts of growing up. The message is clear across the story, but the plot remains a breakup comedy with imperfect characters.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie challenges old romance rules by ending the long relationship without a reunion. The women treat drinking, sex, and career choices as normal parts of adult life. The story mocks male dating behavior and the idea that women must stay agreeable. The film does not attack religion, family, or the wider Western system, so this critique stays personal and comic.
32%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original modern story with no established characters, source material, or historical figures to reinterpret.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few audience posts called the film woke or objected to its feminist and LGBTQ content. A Letterboxd review attacked its focus on men and feminism, and a Rotten Tomatoes user called the LGBTQ material unnecessary. The separate X pass found one tiny conservative account quitting over “gay shit” and “gay fatigue.” The reaction was fringe, with no clear boycott, review-bomb, or major news campaign.

Creator track record context
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has a record of female-led projects with empowerment and queer angles, and she has linked MeToo to politics. Gina Rodriguez has a strong public record of supporting Hispanic representation, women, and feminism that includes different groups. Paul Feig is known for strong female leads and for defending pro-women projects from backlash. This background fits the film’s women-centered and diversity-framed approach.
