Rex Simpson is a smart Florida bartender who gave up a college scholarship when her mother became ill and her father needed her. Her best friend secretly fills her NASA application with false awards and jobs, which gets Rex into astronaut training in Houston. Rex struggles with science classes and strict tests, but her practical skills help her compete. The movie uses broad jokes, a light romance, and a very silly rescue in space.
The film puts women at the center of NASA and gives them most of the major smart and heroic roles. Pam is a black woman who leads the program and is called the smartest astronaut ever tested. Rex and Violet save a trapped crew, later become astronauts, and run a space camp for girls. A short line shows that Violet also finds girls attractive, while a few jokes mention being pro-woman, a world without borders, and white people. These points are easy to see, but the main story is still about second chances, friendship, and following a dream.

Woke representation / casting

Woke political dialogue
The film briefly says manatees taught Rex that the world needs no borders. Rex calls herself a pro-woman woman during a clash with another female trainee. Pam makes a race joke that white people keep acting like white people during the rescue plan. These scattered lines are clear but do not control the story.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
Rex is an underestimated woman whose practical skill lets her outdo candidates with better training. Several women drive the NASA plot, and Rex and Violet become the pair who save the trapped crew. The ending makes them astronauts and founders of a space camp for girls, while a song praises strong women. Violet briefly says she finds both men and women attractive, but her love life never becomes a plot.

0%

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A Space.com review said Roberts’ feminist routine becomes tiring. Reddit comments accused the film of pushing woke feminist, ethnic diversity, and DEI boxes. The complaints focused on the female hero framing and the diverse NASA cast. The reaction stayed limited and did not become a broad news controversy.

Creator track record context
Liz W. Garcia has a cached score of 21/100 and little known activism. Emma Roberts has 22/100 from light liberal and women’s causes, while Greg Silverman has 22/100 from a program helping overlooked directors. The other named producers range from 0 to 12, so the wider team has a mild record.
