Bruce Springsteen is a rising New Jersey rock singer in 1981, just after the success of The River. He pulls away from fame and works alone on the spare album Nebraska. His hard childhood and his father's cruel behavior keep breaking into his life. The quiet, sad story follows his fear, depression, and fight to make honest music.
Bruce depends on manager Jon Landau while the record company hopes for a bigger hit. Bruce starts a relationship with Faye, a local single mother, but he pulls away as his mental health gets worse. Black-and-white memories show his damaged bond with his father and lead to a later moment of forgiveness. The story treats therapy, family hurt, and the need for real human ties as personal struggles.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main roles show Springsteen, his family, manager, and co-workers from this part of his real life. The film does not make casting or a character's identity into a story message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film includes an early recording of Born in the U.S.A., but it ends before that song's later political meaning becomes part of the story. The dialogue centers on making Nebraska, family pain, romance, and depression.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Bruce's main struggle is childhood harm, fear, and depression. His romance with Faye and his turn to therapy are about personal recovery, not race, sex, or group identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The story shows hurt from an abusive father but also shows the father's illness and their later reconciliation. The film does not turn that family pain into a broad attack on men, marriage, religion, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie makes Faye a composite of several past relationships. The film does not change a known character's identity to make a social point.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Right-leaning X accounts linked weak box office to Springsteen's public attacks on Trump and his MAGA fans. Some posts called the movie a Hollywood woke sermon or a woke Disney release. Most complaints focused on Springsteen's off-screen politics rather than a clear scene, line, or casting choice. The reaction pass found no strong wave about forced diversity, gender changes, or LGBTQ content in the movie.
32%
Creator track record context
Scott Cooper has public comments about racial and cultural divides, inclusion, and understanding across groups. Scott Stuber has publicly backed more screen heroes for young people of color and young women. Warren Zanes has no reported record of identity-driven or political activism. Other cached producer profiles range from no such record to broad Democratic fundraising and mild inclusion context.
