Stephanie is a young girl living alone in an isolated home after a worldwide disaster. She spends her days hiding from a shadowy force, caring for a stuffed turtle, and watching cartoons while news reports hint at a ruined world. Her parents, Eric and Jane, return and try to restore family life, but they are frightened by what their daughter has become. The film uses a slow, grim horror tone and keeps the truth hidden until its violent final act.
The main story is about fear inside a family and the danger of a child who cannot control strange powers. Stephanie first seems like a helpless survivor, but the film reveals that she killed her brother and caused the injuries that drove her parents away. Her parents treat her as a threat and seek a medical way to stop her, while Stephanie fights back with deadly force. The ending shows that other children around the world have similar powers, turning one family's crisis into a wider supernatural disaster.
