Michael J. Fox grows up a short kid on a Canadian army base and becomes a huge 1980s movie and TV star. At 29 he learns he has Parkinson’s disease, a serious brain illness that will not go away. He hides it for years while his body gets harder to control. The film moves between his rise to fame, his family life, and how he faces the illness today with humor and grit.
This movie is mainly a life story about fame, illness, and staying hopeful. Viewers mostly see Fox talk about his career, his drinking after the diagnosis, his falls and tremors, and how he learns to live with Parkinson’s. The film also shows him pushing for more research and money to fight the disease. Those moments are about health and fundraising, not race, gender, or queer identity politics. Normal viewers would notice the personal struggle and the research work far more than any modern social-justice agenda.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie.
Woke representation / casting
Real-life doc centered on Fox, his wife Tracy Pollan, and family. Re-enactments match his actual history. Disability is his real condition on camera, not a diversity casting plan for race, gender, or queer roles. Audience-visible identity casting is minimal.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Includes Fox pressing for Parkinson’s research funding and related public advocacy. That is light, health-focused politics viewers can notice. It is not a run of race, gender, queer, or systemic-identity lectures.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Main themes are stardom, hiding illness, drinking, family, falls, optimism, and learning to be “still.” Disability is central as personal illness and grit, not as modern race/gender/queer identity theory or activist messaging.
3%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Mild notes that fame can feel fake and Hollywood success has costs. Not a strong attack on Western faith, traditional family as evil, toxic masculinity as the point, or broad anti-conservative culture framing.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear, notable right-leaning or anti-woke campaign treating this film as DEI, identity politics, or woke propaganda. Reaction is mostly warm and about the personal story.
0%
Creator track record context
Guggenheim’s past climate and political docs and diverse-filmmaker hiring push the score up, as do equity-linked producers (including Laurene Powell Jobs and Concordia nonfiction leaders). Fox’s own track is milder and mostly medical philanthropy plus light left politics. Crew context is mid-range, not extreme.
