This Netflix film follows SpaceX and Elon Musk as they try to put American astronauts back into space after the shuttle program ends. It builds toward the Crew Dragon Demo-2 flight with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley. Viewers see rocket failures, reusable-rocket work, family life on the ground, and the high-stress launch and splashdown. The tone is hopeful, technical, and full of real mission drama.
The movie is mainly about hard engineering, risk, teamwork, and the dream of cheaper spaceflight and a multi-planet future. It spends time with real SpaceX leaders, mission control staff, and two astronaut couples who are parents. Public talk around the film mostly called it a soft SpaceX promo, not a social-justice or identity lecture. A normal viewer would notice a company success story and space thrills far more than any activist message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Return to Space.
Woke representation / casting
Real documentary faces: two male NASA astronauts as the flight crew, Musk, Shotwell as SpaceX COO, engineers and mission-control staff including women and people of color. They appear as real job holders in a modern workplace, not as identity casting for a fiction story. No race/gender swap pattern or quota-style starring push.
5%
Woke political dialogue
Talk is about rockets, safety, cost, Mars, and company risk. Brief political history of commercial crew and Congress appears as space-policy context. No identity sermons, systemic-racism lectures, or activist slogans about gender or race.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core arc is building reusable rockets, surviving early failures, and returning U.S. astronauts to the station. Family life and “dads going to space” are personal color, not identity politics. Multi-planet survival talk is tech/adventure, not modern identity activism.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Shows old aerospace “club” pushback and hard government process around commercial crew. That frames private innovation against slow bureaucracy, not a modern attack on Western culture, family norms, Christianity, or “toxic masculinity.” Film largely celebrates U.S. return to crewed flight.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear wave of right-leaning or anti-woke complaints that the film pushes DEI or identity politics. Known criticism is that it is too flattering to Musk and SpaceX.
0%
Creator track record context
Lead directors score low on identity-driven work (adventure and endurance docs). A few producers have mild progressive or social-issue histories; one producer has a stronger feminist-media record. Overall crew pattern is not a strong woke imprint on this title.
