Matt Walsh, a conservative host and father, sets out to answer one hard question: what is a woman? He travels and talks to doctors, teachers, activists, politicians, and everyday people. The film mixes serious interviews with dry humor. It focuses on sex, gender ideology, kids and medicine, sports, and school rules. The tone is challenging and often skeptical of the answers he gets.
This film does not push progressive woke messaging. It argues against modern gender ideology and treats sex as real and fixed. Viewers see long talks about puberty blockers, surgery, sports, and schools, plus Walsh pressing people who give vague or circular answers. The story ends at home with a simple biological answer from his wife. A normal viewer will notice strong political content, but it is right-leaning and critical of progressive gender ideas, not identity-first or DEI-style messaging.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for What Is a Woman?.
Woke representation / casting
Documentary interview format with experts, activists, and public figures chosen for the gender debate, not as diversity-quota casting or identity signaling for progressive representation goals.
0%
Woke political dialogue
On-screen progressive gender language is shown to be challenged or made to look weak. The film’s own framing and Walsh’s lines push back hard on gender ideology, not for activist DEI speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Gender and sex are the whole subject, but the story rejects progressive identity theory. It argues for biological sex and criticizes transition for kids, not for celebrating queer or identity-first ideology.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
It attacks schools, medicine, and gender experts for progressive gender ideas. That is anti-woke institutional pushback, not left activist critique of “toxic masculinity,” patriarchy, or traditional Western norms. Near-zero for this woke bucket.
2%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear right-leaning or anti-woke claim that the film pushes woke, DEI, or progressive identity politics. Heavy left criticism that it is anti-trans does not count for this factor.
0%
Creator track record context
Key creatives are Daily Wire / conservative documentary people with stored woke scores of 0–1; track record is anti-woke culture-war work, not progressive or identity-first activism.
