Suicide Squad follows Floyd Lawton, a skilled killer known as Deadshot, after the government captures him and other dangerous prisoners. Amanda Waller forces the group into Task Force X and sends them into a ruined Midway City to stop the witch Enchantress and her brother Incubus. The squad includes Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, El Diablo, Killer Croc, and Katana, who must work with soldiers while explosive devices threaten their lives. The movie uses loud action and dark jokes with comic-book violence and a rough antihero tone.
The clearest audience-visible identity choice is Will Smith as Deadshot, who had usually been shown as white in older DC comics. The film also gives major roles to Amanda Waller, Harley Quinn, Enchantress, and Katana. Those identity details do not lead the action or change the team's mission, which stays centered on prison control, guilt, family love, and loyalty. The squad becomes a rough family when its members choose to fight together against a supernatural threat.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Suicide Squad.
Woke representation / casting
The film casts Will Smith, a black actor, as Deadshot, who older DC comics usually showed as white. The film also puts Amanda Waller, a black woman, and Katana, a Japanese woman, in major roles, but both characters fit their established identities. The film's mixed cast was celebrated in its premiere publicity, and Ayer spoke about stronger female characters. The story gives race and gender no major role in the team's mission.
25%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film has no repeated woke political dialogue. The characters discuss orders, prisoners, government missions, and survival instead of race, DEI, sexuality, or activist politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story follows redemption, family love, guilt, loyalty, and teamwork among criminals. Those themes are not built around race, gender, sexuality, or modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The government uses prisoners as weapons and controls them with explosive implants. The film treats that abuse as part of the action plot and does not turn it into a modern critique of capitalism, patriarchy, Christianity, or Western culture.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
The film casts Will Smith as Floyd Lawton, making Deadshot Black while the older comics usually showed him as white. Deadshot is a leading character, so the change is easy for comic readers to see. The story gives him a daughter and a guilt-driven arc, but it does not make race part of that arc. The visible change stays a casting choice instead of a major identity message.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts called the movie woke or DEI trash because Will Smith played Deadshot and Harley Quinn received major attention. Some posts described the casting as a race swap or toxic inclusivity. The complaints had little reach and did not create a boycott or review-bomb drive. Much similar online talk concerned the 2021 sequel or the Kill the Justice League game instead.
12%
Creator track record context
David Ayer's cached profile gives him a low 20/100 score, but he spoke around this film about diversity and stronger female characters. Zack Snyder's cached profile includes liberal and inclusion statements, and casting director Mary Vernieu has discussed representation. Most other listed creators have low cached scores and no clear activist record. The context adds a mild background signal without showing a strong creator pattern.
