Adam Schumann returns to Kansas after a long and violent tour in Iraq. He tries to be a husband and father while nightmares, flashbacks, and guilt follow him home. His friends Solo, Will, and Emory face brain injury, suicide, drug trouble, and broken relationships. The film has a grim, sad, and serious tone, with only small moments of rough humor.
The film includes a Samoan soldier and his Polynesian wife among the main veterans and families. Their roles connect to the Army unit and the events around Solo's injury, marriage, and wish to reenlist. Repeated scenes show long waits, confusing forms, and tired officials at the VA. The story stays centered on PTSD, survivor's guilt, family strain, suicide, friendship, and learning to seek help.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Thank You for Your Service.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main group includes white, Samoan, and black characters in a real Army setting. The film ties the Samoan roles to the characters and does not make diversity the point.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The men speak about PTSD, war, the VA, and family strain. Those lines deal with care and military failure, not identity or activist ideas. The crude racial and sexual jokes are barracks banter, not a political message.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The main themes are combat trauma, survivor's guilt, suicide, marriage, friendship, and getting help. The story does not build its conflict around race, gender, sexuality, or modern identity politics.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film repeatedly shows the Army and the VA failing damaged veterans after combat. The VA makes the men wait, fill out forms, and face staff who seem unable to give quick help. The story also says the military trains men to fight but gives them little support when they return. The criticism targets war policy and veteran care, not family life, religion, or a broad attack on Western culture.
25%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adds or combines some events from the book, but those changes are not about race, gender, sexuality, or a changed hero role.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Other public discussion focused on PTSD, acting, and military realism.
0%
Creator track record context
Jason Hall and David Finkel have little known activist history and are mainly linked to war writing and veteran reporting. Jon Kilik has a stronger left-leaning record through race-and-politics films made with Spike Lee. His past work gives some context, but this film does not carry a race-centered message. The movie stays focused on soldiers, PTSD, families, and veterans' care.
