Arlen is cast out of the United States and left in a fenced desert wasteland with little food or water. Cannibals cut off her arm and leg, but she escapes and reaches Comfort, a rough town led by The Dream. Arlen takes a young girl named Honey after killing Honey’s mother, and Honey’s father, Miami Man, hunts for them. The film is slow, strange, violent, and built around a dark romance and a fight to survive.
The film gives its strongest social message to the idea that a government can label people as useless and push them outside the law. The story returns to exile, immigration, poverty, health, wealth, and social status, so its criticism of government and society shapes the setting and the plot. Arlen is a strong female lead who survives violence, uses a hidden gun, and chooses to rescue Honey, but the film does not turn her strength into a speech about women or equality. Miami Man briefly says that his first love was a boy, while the movie’s main relationship is with Arlen.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Bad Batch.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast includes people from different backgrounds, but the film does not make that mix a diversity message. Miami Man’s Cuban identity is explained by his backstory, and no lead role is framed as a representation-first choice.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Officials warn workers to avoid the exiles and treat them as outside normal society. The Dream lists people judged too poor, sick, old, young, or troubled. Miami Man says that he was sent away because he had no papers. Miami Man also says that his first love was a boy, but this remains a brief detail. These lines give the film a noticeable anti-exclusion and identity message.
35%
Identity-driven story themes
The film makes social rejection its main idea. The government labels people as too poor, sick, old, young, or unwanted, then sends them beyond a wall. Arlen’s journey asks whether people called bad can still form a family and show mercy. Miami Man’s immigration story adds a modern identity theme. His brief mention of a male first love adds a queer detail, but it does not drive the plot.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The United States marks unwanted people, removes them through a border wall, and leaves them outside the law. The film treats this government system as cruel and makes exclusion the reason the wasteland exists. The Dream runs Comfort as a smaller abusive system built on drugs, sexual control, and forced loyalty. The story attacks social rank and abusive leaders, but it does not attack Christianity or normal family life.
48%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story with no established characters or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke backlash is documented. The main reported dispute criticized the treatment of black characters and race in the story, not the film for pushing woke politics.
0%
Creator track record context
The director’s known work often follows lonely outsiders and broken systems. She has rejected fixed labels that define her films as feminist or identity-political. The other cached crew records show some social-issue or inclusive industry work, but little direct DEI activism. This context gives the film a mild creator track record signal.
