Ruby Daly is a sixteen-year-old girl who can enter minds and change memories after a disease kills nearly all American children. The government locks survivors in harsh camps and sorts them by the powers they have. Ruby escapes and joins Liam, Chubs, and Zu on a road trip to find a safe camp run by other young people. The movie mixes dark prison scenes, teen romance, friendship, and simple superpower action.
The main group has a black female hero, a brilliant black boy, an Asian American girl, and a white boy. Ruby has the strongest power, but Liam stays a capable leader and love interest. The story repeatedly treats the children as a feared group that is labeled, split by color, and punished for being different. Ruby learns to accept who she is and joins a fight against adults who want to control her, so the self-acceptance and youth resistance themes shape the whole plot.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Darkest Minds.
Woke representation / casting
The core group includes a black female hero, a brilliant black boy, an Asian American girl, and one white boy. The novel describes Ruby as white, so the lead casting visibly changes the source. The director publicly praised the rare diversity and giving different people chances to lead. Stenberg said the role could help younger black girls feel represented.
58%
Woke political dialogue
The President uses a false family message to sell the prison camps as treatment. The teens call the government cruel and say that only their own group can help them. Ruby ends the movie by promising to fight for a better place for the children. The dialogue uses youth resistance language, but it does not name current parties or policies.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Ruby hides her Orange identity because discovery could mean death. The camps label children by color and punish them for traits they cannot change. The young survivors seek safety among people who claim that color groups should not divide them. Ruby turns fear and self-hate into self-acceptance and organized resistance.
56%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film makes the U.S. government, the CDC, and the military into systems that lie, jail children, force labor, and kill prisoners. The President hides these acts behind a public cure story. The Children’s League also tries to turn young people into weapons. The critique stays broad and does not attack Christianity, family life, or capitalism.

Woke character or canon changes
The novel describes Ruby as white, while the film casts black and biracial actor Amandla Stenberg. The director and actor discussed the choice as welcome representation for people who rarely lead stories like this. The change affects the central hero and is visible throughout the movie. Ruby’s background, romance, and main story remain mostly unchanged.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some book fans objected when Stenberg was cast as the white book version of Ruby. Some messages questioned why a black actor was chosen and asked for other minority characters to be made white. Later user reviews called the movie woke and accused it of forced diversity. The complaints were real but remained limited rather than becoming a major public campaign.
